If I had to describe our stay at MacCallum House Inn in one word, it would be enchanting. We spent two nights at this historic inn in Mendocino, California, and by the time we left, I was already wishing we could stay a little longer. This place is like a fairytale. If you’re looking for a destination with historic Victorian buildings, delicious food, local art, and dramatic coastal cliffs, Mendocino deserves a spot on your California travel list.
Our Adventure Starts Here
Tucked along Northern California’s rugged Pacific coastline, Mendocino is a quaint coastal village full of charm, history, and natural beauty. I loved wandering its quiet streets, popping into local boutiques and art galleries, and taking in the ocean views that seem to appear around every corner. Mendocino is the kind of place where you can spend an afternoon exploring without much of a plan and still find plenty to love.
We visited in October, and it couldn’t have been a lovelier time to experience the coast. Our days were sunny and perfect for exploring town and enjoying meals outdoors. In the evenings, the crisp coastal air made it especially nice to settle in and relax. Two nights felt like a great introduction to Mendocino, although I would have happily stayed longer. Here’s a look at our stay at MacCallum House Inn, including our room, the food we loved, and some of our favorite things to do in the area.
Why Stay at MacCallum House Inn in Mendocino?
I love staying in places that have a little history and personality, and MacCallum House Inn checked both boxes. The Victorian buildings, inviting nooks, and elements reminiscent of New England create a distinct charm for this property. It feels like a natural fit within Mendocino, a town where historic architecture and rugged coastal landscapes are key attractions.
Dating back to 1882, the MacCallum House Inn is a Victorian property located right in the heart of Mendocino. It has so many beautiful rooms, hospitable innkeepers, stunning grounds, and everything you need. Its central location makes it easy to wander the village on foot. You can spend time enjoying beautiful coastal paths, quaint shops, art galleries, and a variety of restaurants all just a short stroll away. My personal favorite: the property’s gardens. The gardens surrounding the inn are a fairytale dream in themselves. You can sit outside, soak in the sun, and even have a fire in the pit at night. It’s everything a fairytale getaway is made of.
MacCallum House Inn Accommodations
There’s a delightful variety of accommodations to choose from, each with its own unique charm. You can opt for a stay in the Victorian Main House, relax in the beautifully restored Historic Barn, or escape to one of the cozy cottages scattered across the grounds. Plus, there are additional suites and vacation rentals just a short walk away. Honestly, there is a stay for everyone at the MacCallum House Inn.
Whether you choose a space with a warm fireplace, a private deck with stunning Pacific Ocean views, a soothing soaking tub, or even a hot tub or sauna, you’re sure to find something that feels just right. And if you’re traveling with your furry friend, there are pet-friendly options available, making your stay even more enjoyable.
Our Room at MacCallum House Inn: Historic Barn Room 14
We stayed in Room 14, The William Otis Kelly, in the Historic Barn. It was such a charming place to call home for our two nights in Mendocino. There’s something about staying in a historic building that makes a trip feel a little more special, and this room was exactly what we were hoping for. The room had a big, comfortable king bed, a private bathroom with a shower, a mini fridge, and coffee for slow mornings. There was even a private porch with chairs and a hot tub. But my favorite part had to be the fireplace.
There’s nothing quite like ending a day exploring the coast with a cozy fire burning in your room. It made the room feel extra inviting and was everything we needed for our coastal getaway. Each room in the Historic Barn has its own character, with thoughtful touches that make every stay feel unique. Depending on the room, you might find river-stone fireplaces, decks, ocean views, hot tubs, or even saunas. And if you’re traveling with your pup, the Barn is pet-friendly, too!
Dining at MacCallum House Inn
One of my favorite aspects of the property is its exceptional on-site dining, which adds an extra layer of comfort and enjoyment to the overall experience. Having MacCallum House Inn Restaurant and the Grey Whale Bar & Café right at the inn makes it effortless to enjoy a delicious meal or unwind with a drink after a full day of exploring Mendocino.
The convenience of having these wonderful dining options just steps away means there is no need to travel far to find a memorable meal or a relaxing place to spend the evening. I especially appreciate how this combination of great food, inviting ambiance, and convenience allows guests to fully relax and enjoy their stay without having to leave the property. It truly enhances the charm of the inn and makes the entire experience feel even more special. You can check out their menu here, but note they do change the menu and have specials daily.
Breakfast at MacCallum House Inn: What We Ate
One of the perks of staying at MacCallum House Inn is the included gourmet breakfast. We only got to enjoy it once during our two-night stay because we had an early flight the next morning, but I’m glad we made time for it. We ate in the sunroom, which was beautiful. I loved sitting with my warm coffee and watching the hummingbirds flutter around the garden. It was such a peaceful way to start the morning.
For my meal, I ordered the cornmeal pancakes with huckleberry syrup and lemon zest butter. They were SO good! My fiancé ordered the scrambled eggs with grilled Yukon Gold potatoes, house-made toast and jam, and a side of bacon. I couldn’t resist sneaking a piece of his toast, and I’m glad I did! The toast and jam were delicious, too. He agreed that his breakfast was just as tasty and filling.
Breakfast is generally served from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on weekends, according to the information available during our visit. It was included with our stay, although some extras may cost more. I recommend checking with the inn before your visit for the latest hours and menu options. Between the cornmeal pancakes and sitting in the sunroom watching hummingbirds in the garden, breakfast was one of my favorite parts of our stay. I only wish we hadn’t had to miss it on our second morning!
Dinner at MacCallum House Restaurant in Mendocino
While breakfast was a highlight, dinner at MacCallum House Restaurant was another reason I’d recommend staying at the inn. The restaurant embraces a farm-to-table approach, using seasonal ingredients from local farms and producers. Its menu changes throughout the year to showcase Northern California’s flavors. I always appreciate restaurants that highlight local ingredients, and this was a wonderful place to enjoy a meal in Mendocino.
We had a 7 p.m. reservation, which was perfect after spending the late afternoon taking photos along the coast. Our waiter, Adam, was attentive, personable, and knowledgeable. He shared details about the nightly specials and local wines, which I really appreciated. We dined in the room with the fireplace, making the experience feel extra cozy. My fiancé enjoyed a local beer, while I ordered a delicious house-made tea with a dash of mint. They provided the table with bread and butter, and of course we needed to try a starter dish. We started with the chive gnocchi, which was perfection. For my entrée, I ordered the wild mushroom risotto cakes with kale, butternut, olive, and pistachio sauce, served over a pomegranate balsamic reduction. My fiancé chose the nightly special: halibut with green beans and mashed potatoes.
For dessert, we shared the Chocolate Extravaganza. It featured dark chocolate pudding, hazelnut mousse, praline, candied ginger truffle, and chocolate brownie ice cream. It was chef’s kiss. The restaurant makes its ice cream in-house, and it was some of the best I’ve ever had. During our visit, dinner service generally began at 5 p.m. daily. If you’re interested in the five-course tasting menu, plan to be seated by 7 p.m. and confirm availability when booking. Whether you’re staying at the inn or visiting Mendocino for the day, I highly recommend dinner here. The food was a highlight of our trip and a lovely way to end a day.
Things to Do in Mendocino, California
One of the best things about staying at MacCallum House Inn is its location in the heart of Mendocino. We loved being able to step outside and explore the village on foot, without having to get in the car every time we wanted to go somewhere. From browsing local boutiques to taking in the dramatic coastal scenery, there was so much to enjoy just steps from our room.
Explore Downtown Mendocino’s Shops and Art Galleries
Downtown Mendocino is filled with independent boutiques, art galleries, charming little shops, and inviting local eateries. It’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon wandering without a set itinerary, popping into shops and discovering hidden gems along the way. We loved strolling through the village streets, admiring the historic architecture, and browsing the unique finds in the locally owned shops. For a relaxing break, I highly recommend stopping by Patterson’s Pub for a drink or Wingspan for a coffee and something delicious.
Art is woven into the fabric of this coastal community, with plenty of galleries and creative spaces to explore along the way. What I love most about Mendocino is that there’s no need to plan every moment. Some of the best experiences come from simply slowing down, following your curiosity, and wandering wherever the day takes you. It’s a place that invites you to embrace the moment and discover its charm one little stop at a time.
Walk Along the Mendocino Headlands
Just steps from the village, Mendocino Headlands State Park offers some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in the area. The trails wind along rugged cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, with sweeping views of the coastline and waves crashing against the rocks below. We loved how easy it was to go from exploring the village to standing above the ocean and taking in the scenery. The contrast between Mendocino’s historic streets and its wild, rugged coastline is part of what makes this destination so special.
Our stay at the MacCallum House Inn was especially meaningful because we were celebrating our recent engagement. We wanted to do something special to remember this exciting time in our lives, so we decided to plan an engagement photoshoot along the Mendocino coast. We worked with Fallen Moon Photography, a local photographer in the Mendocino area, for our session at Mendocino Headlands State Park. It’s a magical place. We even saw whale spouts while doing the shoot!
With the dramatic coastal cliffs, the endless stretch of ocean, and the soft evening light, it was such a beautiful setting for our photos. The Mendocino coast is especially stunning around golden hour. As the sun begins to set, the light softens over the landscape, creating a beautiful contrast between the rugged cliffs and the peaceful blue ocean. It felt like the perfect backdrop for such a special moment in our lives. I’m so glad we chose Mendocino for our engagement photos. Having these pictures to look back on will always remind me of this trip and the excitement of this chapter of our lives. I’d recommend reaching out to a local photographer who knows the area and can help you find the best location based on your preferred scenery, lighting, and time of day.
Go Hiking at Van Damme State Park
We also wanted to spend some time enjoying the natural beauty that makes this part of Northern California so special. During our stay, we drove a short distance from MacCallum House Inn to Van Damme State Park for a hike. The park offers a wonderful change of scenery, with forested trails, lush greenery, and opportunities to experience the peaceful beauty of the Mendocino coast. This hike took us through the redwoods and was so peaceful. It was a great way to spend time outdoors and explore a different side of the area beyond the village itself.
I love how quickly you can go from wandering through a charming coastal town to hiking among the trees and enjoying the quiet of nature. That combination of small-town charm and beautiful outdoor spaces is one of the things that makes Mendocino such a wonderful destination. During our visit, we paid a $10 entrance fee and understood that it also covered Russian Gulch State Park. Since park fees, access, and day-use arrangements can change, I recommend checking the latest information before your visit. There is also Jughandle Statepark nearby, which we visited. They have some great views and easy hiking!
Enjoy a Relaxing Afternoon at MacCallum House Inn
After our hike, we drove back to the inn and picked up lunch from a spot just up the street. Rather than heading straight out for another activity, we decided to bring our food back to MacCallum House Inn and enjoy a relaxing afternoon in the garden. We sat in the sunshine, watched hummingbirds flutter around the property, and took some time to unwind after our morning outdoors. It was such a simple afternoon, but it ended up being one of my favorite memories from our stay. We hadn’t originally planned to spend the afternoon at the inn, but I’m so glad we did.
With so much to see and do in Mendocino, it’s easy to fill your itinerary from morning to night. Still, one of the nicest parts of staying somewhere special is having the opportunity to slow down and enjoy the property itself. Sometimes, a quiet afternoon in the sunshine is exactly what you need on a trip.
Tips for Booking a Stay at MacCallum House Inn
If you’re thinking about booking MacCallum House Inn, here are a few things worth keeping in mind.
- Choose your accommodations carefully. The Main House, Historic Barn, cottages, and suites each offer a different experience. Consider what matters most to you before booking. Also keep in mind some require a two-night minimum stay.
- Check the pet policy. Many accommodations are pet-friendly, but some rooms in the Main House have restrictions.
- Make time for breakfast. The included breakfast was one of our favorite parts of staying here and a delicious way to begin the day.
- Consider a dinner reservation. The restaurant is a lovely part of the MacCallum House experience, especially if you’re celebrating a special occasion.
- Pack layers. Mendocino’s coastal weather can be cool and changeable, even when the sun is shining. A jacket is helpful for walks along the headlands and sunset photos.
- Plan your drive. The journey is part of the fun, so leave time for scenic stops and allow for changing traffic and road conditions. We drove, and the drive through the redwoods and coast was an adventure in itself.
- Leave room for downtime. We enjoyed having time to relax in the garden, watch the hummingbirds, and take a break between activities rather than filling every hour with plans.
- Double-check before you book. I always recommend that before booking, you confirm current room availability, minimum-stay requirements, restaurant hours, and other details directly with the inn and relevant park services.
Is MacCallum House Inn Worth It?
Absolutely! If you’re visiting Northern California, I’d put MacCallum House Inn on your list. Our two nights here included so many things we love about traveling: a historic place to stay, delicious food, time outdoors, and the chance to celebrate our engagement somewhere beautiful. I loved the character of the Historic Barn, the breakfast, the dinner, and how easy it was to explore Mendocino on foot.
One of my favorite memories was spending the afternoon in the garden after our hike. Sitting in the sunshine and watching the hummingbirds was so magical. Truly, what I appreciated most about MacCallum House Inn was its location and character. We could walk into town to browse the shops and galleries, explore the coastline, and return to a cozy room at the end of the day. Having a restaurant right on the property was another bonus.
Mendocino is a destination I’d happily return to. I loved wandering through the village, taking in the ocean views, and having time to enjoy the area without rushing from one activity to the next. If you’re planning a trip to the Northern California coast and love historic inns, great food, and beautiful ocean views, I’d absolutely recommend adding MacCallum House Inn to your list. We had such a wonderful stay, and I’d love to come back for another visit.
