A Weekend Getaway in Maggie Valley, Exploring Haywood County in Western North Carolina

Ready for a mountain-filled adventure? Tucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, Haywood County is a hidden gem that’s perfect for anyone who loves small-town charm, mountain views, and outdoor adventures. This area is made up of five unique communities, Maggie Valley, Waynesville, Lake Junaluska, Canton, and Clyde, each with its own personality.

From 46 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway to world-class fishing, hiking, and cozy mountain dining, it’s the kind of place that draws you in and keeps you coming back. I’ve been here a few times, passing through, but I recently spent four days and three nights in Maggie Valley to get the full experience. Here’s how I spent my trip and all the spots you’ll want to add to your Haywood County itinerary.

Staying in Maggie Valley: Dogwood Boutique Motel

Our home base for the trip was the Dogwood Boutique Motel in Maggie Valley, and it was the perfect choice. This is a great combination of luxury and mountain life. We stayed in the Magnolia Deluxe King Studio, which came with a mini fridge, toiletries, and the dreamiest view of the creek right outside. The motel also offers a community kitchen, patio, outdoor jacuzzi, and gym with a Peloton and a treadmill. A huge plus is that it is also within walking distance to Maggie Valley shops and restaurants. My tip? Book a top-floor room for gorgeous creek views and a little extra quiet.

Thursday Itinerary: Canton Farmers Market + Southern Porch

We had a bit of a drive from Raleigh, North Carolina, but before checking into the motel, we made a quick stop in Canton, North Carolina. We caught the last bit of the Canton Farmers Market. Fresh produce, handmade goods, friendly faces — it was the perfect start. Dinner was at Southern Porch, a charming spot with incredible food and drinks. If you’re in Haywood County, this place should be on your list. Once we checked in, we got ready for bed because on Friday, we had a big day of hiking through the water and fishing ahead of us.

Friday Day Itinerary: Fly Fishing in Maggie Valley

Friday morning began early at Maggie Valley Breakfast Depot with biscuits fresh from the oven and freshly brewed coffee—exactly what you want before a day on the water. This small breakfast spot is a must-try! Seriously, the best biscuits I’ve ever had. They open early at 6 am and close at 11 am, so set your alarm before heading out to fish or hike.

Next, we headed right next door to the Maggie Valley Fly Fishing Shop for a half-day guided fishing trip. The guides are amazing, providing all the gear plus expert tips. Our guide, Joe, took us to some beautiful fishing spots (I’m keeping the locations secret — you’ll have to ask the shop when you visit) where we caught several wild rainbow trout. I will say that if you are not used to hiking in the water with waders, this is not for the faint of heart. After we were done, my legs were feeling it!

Friday Evening Itinerary: Relaxing + Food

After recharging with a hearty lunch at Maggie Valley Restaurant, we headed back to The Dogwood Motel to relax by the creek. There’s something about the sound of running water that just melts the day’s worries away, especially when paired with a couple of well-earned cold drinks (our little reward for catching fish earlier).

Once we were feeling refreshed, we made our way to Waynesville to explore the local scene. Our final stop was Frog Level Brewing, and let me tell you, this place was buzzing with energy. Cold beer in hand, a warm salted pretzel on the table, live music filling the air, and the crisp mountain breeze wrapping around us — it was the perfect ending to the day. Frog Level Brewing is truly a gem, and if you love a great brewery experience, it’s one you won’t want to miss.

    Saturday Itinerary: Waynesville Shops

We started Saturday at Main Street Diner in Waynesville. They have great breakfast options and a very cool atmosphere. We finished up breakfast and then made our way to the Haywood Historic Farmers Market for local crafts and produce. This is a great way to give back locally and experience the hospitality of the Western North Carolina mountains.

We then wandered through downtown. We visited Mast General Store, and this is a must. Their candy selection is legendary — my picks were the s’more and moon pie candy bars (and if you’re a Cheerwine fan, they have that too). For a caffeine boost, we stopped at Panacea Coffee Company, where I got a pumpkin spice latte, and Ethan grabbed a plum lime soda from Waynesville Soda Jerks that he’s still talking about. I loved the vibe of this shop and its creekside, so you can take your coffee and sit and enjoy the scenery.

    Saturday Itinerary: Maggie Valley Adventures

There are so many shops and fun adventures to be had in the town of Maggie Valley. Back in Maggie Valley, we wandered through the charming aisles of Maggie Mountaineer Crafts, a cozy mountain shop brimming with handmade treasures, rustic décor, and quirky souvenirs that feel like a slice of Appalachian history. They have a super cute museum as well, which I loved. Next, I had to visit the Maggie Valley Rock Shop & Gem Mine. It was a glittering paradise for rock hounds. I found some beautiful gems, each sparkling with its unique colors and patterns. We bought a bucket for about $25, and I had a great time sifting through the sand to discover my treasures.

Down the road, for just $1 per person, we climbed the Soco Craft Tower. This is where the 360° mountain views stretched for miles, layers upon layers of hazy blue peaks fading into the horizon. It is a perfect spot for a photo, and the gift shop is pretty great too! From there, we set off to visit Soco Falls. This is a breathtaking double waterfall tucked away in the forest. The falls sit right in between Maggie Valley and the Cherokee Indian Reservation. Thanks to the newly updated trail and viewing platform, you can easily make the round trip in under 30 minutes without sacrificing a single moment of jaw-dropping beauty.

Dinner brought us back to Waynesville for a cozy evening at The Scotsman Public House. The hearty plates and warm hospitality made for the perfect end to the day. This place is fantastic, with a classic Celtic vibe. If you visit, be sure to try the shepherd’s pie; it was amazing! One of my favorite aspects of exploring Haywood County is how close everything is.

    Hidden Gems in Haywood County

I didn’t have time on this trip, but there are great swimming options in Haywood County. If you know me, you know I have a soft spot for summer swimming holes. Haywood County has some great ones. Bubbling Spring Falls offers a peaceful escape. Sunburst Rocks is perfect for both sunbathing and splashing. And then there’s the always-popular Midnight Hole, where emerald waters swirl beneath a curtain of rushing falls.

Sunday Itinerary: Coffee + Blue Ridge Parkway

Sunday began at Caffeine and Chaos in Maggie Valley, and what a vibe it was! As soon as I walked in, the aroma of fresh coffee greeted me. Their menu is filled with fun, bold flavors that you rarely see elsewhere. If you have a little one, there’s a fantastic indoor playground that looks like so much fun. After enjoying my caffeine fix, we took one last short—but truly gorgeous—cruise along the Blue Ridge Parkway. I love the Blue Ridge Parkway and soaking in those stunning mountain views one final time. We couldn’t leave without making a couple more quick shopping stops to grab a few more souvenirs. Then, just like that, it was time to head back.

Why Maggie Valley and Haywood County Should Be Your Next Trip

If you’re looking for outdoor adventure, small-town charm, and mountain views, this part of Western North Carolina has it all. You can spend the morning fly fishing in the cool mountain streams, hike to breathtaking waterfalls, wander through local shops filled with handmade treasures, or sip coffee by a creek while listening to the water rush by. The pace of life here is slow in the best way, and you can’t help but fall in love with it.

    Elk Bucks Promotion

One of the best parts about planning a trip right now is the Elk Bucks promotion. If you book at least a two-night stay at a Haywood County accommodation through September 30th, 2025, you can claim a digital “Elk Buck” gift card worth up to $200. We did this during our visit, and it was such a fun perk. You can use Elk Bucks at participating restaurants, shops, and attractions all over the county, whether that’s grabbing a cozy meal at a local café, picking up a handmade souvenir, or trying something new.

It’s easy to spot where they’re accepted, too—look for the “Elk Bucks Accepted Here” signs posted outside businesses. I love that this program not only gives you a little extra to spend, but also encourages you to explore more of what Haywood County has to offer. Overall, Maggie Valley is the perfect base for exploring all of Haywood County. The Dogwood Boutique Motel is cozy and convenient. Trust me, once you visit, you’ll start planning your return.

    With Love,
