Plan A Visit and Rediscover the Beauty of Western North Carolina

It’s time to plan a visit and rediscover the beauty of Western North Carolina. If you’re anything like me, you crave adventure—the kind that refreshes your soul, fills your camera roll, and leaves your heart a little fuller. That’s exactly what Western North Carolina offers—and this year, there’s no better time to go.

I recently discovered that Visit North Carolina launched a campaign called “Rediscover the Unforgettable,” and let me tell you, it couldn’t be more on point. After Hurricane Helene hit last year, this area has been working hard to bounce back, and now they’re ready to welcome explorers like us with open arms. Whether you’re craving waterfalls, hiking trails, charming mountain towns, or cozy cabins, this region is brimming with unforgettable magic.

    Western North Carolina

Western North Carolina is one of my favorite areas to explore. If you need some outdoor therapy, this is your time to visit. I recently stayed at Mount Mitchell Eco Retreat (yes, the views are that good), and it reminded me why this area feels so sacred. Nestled in the Black Mountains, the air is crisp, the trails are stunning, and the pace of life just slows down in the best way.

Looking for gems—literally? One of my favorite hidden finds was the Emerald Village Mine in Little Switzerland. It’s like stepping into a treasure hunt carved into a mountain. You can mine for real emeralds and explore an underground world that feels like something out of an Indiana Jones movie. And yes, you better believe the waterfalls are calling. Sliding Rock, Linville Falls, and Looking Glass Falls are just a few epic spots to chase. And don’t even get me started on the scenic drives along the Blue Ridge Parkway… grab your playlists, snacks, and someone you love and hit the road.

    Where Adventure and Culture Collide

This region is not only about nature; it is full of character. Towns like Asheville, Boone, and Cherokee offer a vibrant mix of delicious food, artistic vibes, and rich history. You could spend hours walking through downtown Asheville to enjoy street performers, quirky coffee shops, and local art. To experience some Appalachian charm, Boone features hiking trails that will take your breath away, both literally and figuratively.

Cherokee provides a remarkable cultural experience rooted in Native American history and heritage. If you appreciate spiritual moments and storytelling, this is a must-visit destination. After a long hike, treat yourself to a massage, a glass of wine, or a stay at a wellness-focused resort like Waynesville Inn & Golf Club or Rumbling Bald Resort. Trust me, there’s nothing like relaxing with a mountain view after a day of adventure.

    Why Now Is the Time

Traveling with intention is truly special, and this year, your visit to Western North Carolina can make a real difference. As part of the “Rediscover the Unforgettable” campaign, the state is investing millions to help the region rebuild, and every dollar you spend contributes to communities getting back on their feet.

This means that your next vacation is not only a personal treat but also support for families, small businesses, and mountain towns striving to thrive again. Additionally, some parks and trails, like Chimney Rock State Park, have reopened with timed reservations, resulting in fewer crowds and a more peaceful experience for you.

    Plan Your Trip

I love the North Carolina mountains, so I want to share a few personal recommendations to help you get started. These are places and experiences I have personally enjoyed and loved. More will come soon, along with more reasons why!

    • Stay: Mount Mitchell Eco Retreat or a cabin in Little Switzerland
    • Stay: Lakeview at Fontana is a favorite if you want a little spa-style getaway near Bryson City or the Tapoco Lodge in Robbinsville, North Carolina
    • Do: Flyfishing…need I say more? Visit Haywood County and enjoy some great fishing!
    • Do: Gem mining at Emerald Village Mine, I love a good cavern, and Linville is incredible, hiking at Grandfather Mountain or Harper Creek Falls, or visiting the Mile High Swinging Bridge
    • Do: Waterfalls are all over Western North Carolina. They are epic, they are beautiful, and in the Summer months…they are a MUST!
    • Eat: I mean, anything in Asheville is incredible; my favorites are Sunny Point Café and Rhubarb.
    • Explore: Cherokee cultural sites, Blue Ridge Parkway overlooks, and Pisgah National Forest.
    • Relax: Spa day at Rumbling Bald or sunrise coffee by a quiet lake nearby (so many options!)

And if you’re into content creation (hi fellow creators!), this region is a goldmine for photos and videos. Think lush forests, waterfalls, charming small towns, and panoramic mountain sunsets. Yes, it’s that dreamy.
