Daya, a sixteen-year-old singer, and songwriter from Pittsburg, PA, performed a live intimate acoustic set for select viewers today at our very own Charlotte KISS 95.1FM. Today, AJ from the KISS nightly show, introduced Daya, as one of the stations new artists on the air. Daya, along with her younger sister and mother, we’re excited to be in Charlotte, and Daya told AJ and audience members she came eager to sing!
Daya opened up with a cover of hit musical artist Rihanna’s song entitled “Diamonds;” which she reinvented with her own soulful spin on the song; including an excerpt from Marilyn Monroe’s song, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.” (It was amazing!) She then sang her new single entitled “Hideaway,” which you can now hear on KISS 95.1. “Hideaway,” is a very relate-able song; talking about how it’s so hard sometimes to find the ‘good guys’ within the crowd. (I feel you girl) And I know a lot of girls and guys can relate to your song too. One of the things I really loved watching Daya sing was the passion. You could really hear her soul when she sang: which creates a connection between the artist and the listener. Daya really is a truly unique singer and songwriter, with a diverse sound, which is something that makes a true musical artist stand out.
After the set, Daya explained she’s had a few little flings here and there, but has been focusing on working on herself before dealing with relationships. She also told AJ her older sister was the one who introduced her to music as a child and then started the piano at age three. She said her musical influences include my personal favorite, Amy Winehouse, and recently artist, Tori Kelly. AJ then played a little game with Daya, called ‘Date His or Dis Him,’ where she would pick one or the other from the names given. Some of the guys she agreed to date were Ryan Gosling, Chris Hemsworth, and Jimmy Fallon. Unfortunately, Conan O’Brien and Justin Bieber didn’t make the cut.
Daya’s interview then entered with probably my favorite part, Silento “Watch Me.” I and AJ GOT TO ‘Whip It’ and ‘Nae Nae’ with Daya, making it a fun and an end to the day!
