Black History Month Artist Spotlight: Dexter Jordan

In honor of Black History Month, let us honor a local influential African-American in the Charlotte area that is making a positive impact on both our culture and our city today; Dexter Jordan.

A solo musician (and a friend) who got his start at the mere age of nineteen, Dexter Jordan is a local Charlotte native that aims to change the music industry with his unique style and personal Afro-American touch. With some of his major African-American influences being Erykah Badu, Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder and Prince, Dexter was inspired to incorporate into his own music the positive messages these veteran artists have exemplified on both the music industry and our world.

Dexter shares, “What I love most about these African-American artists is that they were never afraid to show their blackness. I feel a sense of self-love in every artist I listed for you and that is so powerful to what I portray in my artistry. With these creative influences being a powerful driving force in his musical developments, I found that Dexter Jordan’s works are not only personal reflections of himself, but speak upon subject matters that are relatable to young millennials like myself today.

As I asked Dexter what Black History Month meant to him, he responded with “Black History supersedes the month of February, but we dedicate this time of year to honor the greats who paved the way for individuals such as myself. One day I will tell my children and my children’s children about greats, such as Martin Luther King Jr. and George Washington Carver who changed the world. I am proud of my history and I carry the torch for many generations to come.”

Dexter aims to make his African-American ancestors proud and those who will come after his time is done. We can expect to see Dexter Jordan grow as much as he can while achieving his goal and we are confident in stating he will continue to change the music industry we know today. We cannot wait to see what his artistry can bring to our Charlotte community.
