Ska music is definitely an acquired taste. It’s almost like super happy island music that undoubtedly gives you sheer excitement when hearing it live. (At least that’s how I feel about it) That’s why I am a big fan of the band Reel Big Fish, which is like the God Father of this type of music. At the Vans Warped Tour this year, I was able to watch the band play on stage and got to interview Reel Big Fish and vigorously from start to finish, loved every minute of it!
Keeping the constant theme of the party spirit, the band’s performance was certainly a ball of fun. One thing I love about this band is how they play all their own instruments, no backtracking and really connect with their audience. While watching this band play live from backstage, it was nearly impossible for me not to get caught up in the enthusiasm of the crowd. The jumping around, the strange kick choreography and wild costumes; this band is just a plain old good time.
Reel Big Fish is an American ska punk band from Huntington Beach, California, best known for the 1997 hit “Sell Out.” The band consists of members, Aaron Barrett who is vocals, guitar, Billy Kottage on Trombone, John Christianson playing the trumpet, Ed Smokey Beach with the drums, Derek Gibbs as the bass player and finally Matt Appleton on saxophone and vocal harmonies.
During our interview, we met with John Christianson who plays trumpet in the band and was actually the only trumpet player on the Vans Warped Tour this year, and got to talk to him about the tour life and band as a whole. What was funny about the interview was during it I actually mentioned to him how much my brother too loved the band and so did Michele’s (My partner in crime) so he signed a very humorous autograph for them both. Another cool thing about the band, they now have their own hot sauce! (Yes that spicy good shit people love everything) Not spilling out all the rest of the details of the interview, but in the end, John did let me know Reel Big Fish could be putting out a new album in the near future; so fingers crossed!
