Airband is known as a dance/acting competition held during the week of the university’s Greek Week. It is quite possibly one of the most exciting, challenging, and competitive out of all the Greek events during Greek week; but it’s my favorite part.
Now, I don’t really know much about how the fraternity side handles Airband, however, I do know a thing or two about the sorority side. With the use of creativity, props, and costumes; Airband is an elaborate Greek event that I will forever be thankful for having and participating in with my chapter. Why? Well, after participating in Airband each since my freshman year of college, I and my sorority sisters (CHI OMEGA for those of you who were wondering) won Airband not only once…but TWICE (#TwoPeat) during the course of my college stay. It was magnificent. (Especially since I was the chair my senior year)
Which got me thinking, winning Airband twice during the course of four years is pretty darn impressive. So what’s the secret? Well, after giving it a good ponder I finally came up with a list of 15 GIFs (Graphics Interchange Format) “moving pictures” to explain to you all how you COULD win Airband with your own sorority. So, with that being said let the games begin.
How to Win AIRBAND…As Explained by “15” GIF’s
- SLAY THEM WITH YOUR THEME. Pick a CREATIVE, Solid, and Workable Theme. If your theme doesn’t flow you GOT TO GO.
- WORK, WORK, WORK. Find a happy medium with practicing. Okay, my sisters and I literally practiced every night, every week leading up to the event. Sometimes this worked, sometimes it was purely pointless. You need to practice enough to not wear yourself out or your team out.
- THE CHOSEN ONES. Okay so if you are the chair of your sorority’s Airband team, you CAN NOT do this all by yourself. Unless you have a death wish, then be my guest. So make sure you chose your team wisely. Make sure you give everyone roles and delegate everything. Guarantee everything works out smoother when you do and that’s a win.
- EVERYONE IS A PRESCHOOL DANCER. Okay, so obviously some of us can dance and some of us cannot. However, this does not mean you have to dumb down everything in your production, but you must remember sometimes simple is better and definitely cleaner. Teach like everyone is a new dancer and you’ll see the positive results.
- FRIEND-ENEMIES. I have come to learn to keep those people you secretly can’t stand close works out in your favor. You will have a greater chance of winning if you keep those people close. Everyone loves everyone equals win!
- : 30 SECOND SONG HARRY. So growing up, and we all know this person, someone who gets control of the music and only plays it for 30 seconds. Well, you need to be that person when organizing your song choices for Airband. If you play a song too long, have the same people on stage it’s going to get boring. You bore the audience, no-win.
- SURPRISE B*TCHES. So in Airband, you have to be Jesus at the element of surprise; especially when it comes to shouting outs towards other fraternities and sororities within your Greek Life. It makes it memorable, which is important for when those judges are choosing their winner.
- LET THEM HATE YOU. Let the other sororities try and be sneaky and find out your theme, songs, your dance moves, and whatever else they want. Why? Because you and your sisters are going to be the bigger person and not care. Haters gonna hate…but that won’t make them win.
- RECRUIT A PAINTER. When it comes to recruitment, you need to seriously find some girls who can paint. It will save you a$$. Find a painter, paint a win.
- GLITTER THE SH*TOUT OF EVERYTHING. Honestly, this one explains itself. Glitter makes everything better. Costumes, props, and even faces. Win.
- COFFEE IS JESUS. You must learn to survive off of coffee and whatever else your poison of choice is. You will have to balance being a semi-professional dancer, student, sister, and human being. This is key to winning.
- DROP THE BASS… Your final song or even maybe even second to last must be a Dubstep remix. This is very important. You need to surprise your crowd and there is NO BETTER WAY to do this than drop a sick beat.
- YOU ARE ALL SISTERS. Be a team player. You are with your sorority sisters, they are your family. Don’t forget that. If you do, no win for you.
- BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, REMEMBER TO HAVE FUN. I love competition as much as the next psycho, but we have to remember this isn’t life or death, so make it fun. You are spending a day in and day out with your sisters, the woman you share so many values with and love. If you remember to embrace the fun with Airband you will win.
- Oh…and have THE DARK LORD on your side. (Just kidding)
